iOS 16.4 release date prediction

We haven’t heard anything official about when the full iOS 16.4 public release is going to be from Apple, besides that it is going to be Spring 2023 (which we’ve technically been in since March 20th).

The general expectation was that the latest version would come out in March 2023, close to the annual spring Apple event. This month is nearly at an end, but given we know the Apple Music Classical app is coming out on March 28th – this is our best current estimate of the likely iOS 16.4 release date.

iOS 16.4 Beta release date

The first iOS 16.4 beta release date was on February 16th, 2023, follow by the second developer Beta on February 28th, the third on the 8th March, and the fourth on the 16th March.

Usually Apple releases the first developer beta the following day after the previous full OS version goes public e.g. when iOS 16.3 was made public, the developer beta of iOS 16.4 was expected the next day. This didn’t end up happening however: the first developer beta of iOS 16.4 didn’t debut until weeks after iOS 16.3 went live – it’s possible these factors could result in the delay of the full version of iOS 16.4.

Features in the iOS 16.4 beta versions include the following (though you can read a more detailed breakdown in the iOS 16.4 beta release notes):

  • New Emojis (shaking face, jellyfish, donkey, moose, three different color hearts etc.)
  • Web Push Notification support (via Safari, assuming you opt in)
  • Podcasts & CarPlay improvements
  • Revamped Home app (with new architecture)
  • AirPlay 2 support for Apple TV
  • Playing Apple Music on Homepod
  • iCloud Storage option improvement
  • You will also be able to store your backups in the cloud with the limit increasing up to 2TB storage.
  • Beta Updates Menu (under Settings > General > Software Update)

How many versions of iOS 16 will there be?

Considering iOS 15 currently has an update till iOS 15.7.3, we expect iOS 16 to have a similar level of updates in the future, if not more.

iOS 15 Version History

iOS 15 was the fifteenth released operating system update by Apple, and it was officially released on 12th September 2022. It was also the last version of iOS to support the iPod Touch, as Apple dropped the support beginning with iOS 16.

There were updated features ranging from new look notifications to cross-app drag to Facetime to Maps to Photos. Almost every major app got a significant update or upgrade.

The “focus” was a new feature added in the iOS 15 update where the user was allowed to change their state. The state included work, do not disturb, and sleep, or you could customize the focus to your preference. iOS 15 was succeeded by iOS 16 on 12th September 2022.
