AMD announces four Zen 4 based Ryzen 7000 series CPUs at its “together we advance PCs” event

We’ve been waiting for this moment for some time now, AMD has finally officially announced the AMD Zen 4 Ryzen 7000 series line-up. AMD at its “Together we advance PCs” event, revealed all the information we needed about its up-and-coming Zen 4 processors and AM5 motherboards.

AMD CEO Dr. Lisa Su opened the presentation that took place on Monday 30th August at 12am BST, by introducing the new Zen 4 architecture and quoting it as a “History-making scale and pace of innovation”. She then went on to excite millions of gamers around the world with news of Zen 4’s release.

AMD Zen 4 release date, price & performance

Zen 4 is AMD’s all-new CPU architecture, built off a 5nm manufacturing process, Zen 4 is the first of its kind. Besides the innovative architecture, Zen 4 promised to push the envelope in terms of performance and power efficiency. Based on what was revealed by Dr. Lisa Su, and Mark Papermaster this morning, we’d have to strongly agree.

AMD estimated, earlier this year, that Zen 4 would deliver an 8% – 10% uplift in IPC (Instructions Per Clock) over Zen 3. However, as AMD optimizes its Zen 4 processors for production, they have seen an IPC uplift closer to 13%.

Similarly, Zen 4 has been optimized for higher core frequencies, with the Ryzen 7000 series flagship (Ryzen 9 7950X) coming in at 5.7GHz officially, that’s a whole 800MHz faster than the Zen 3 flagship CPU (Ryzen 9 5950X).

As a result, this has forced Zen 4’s single-threaded performance metrics through the roof, with an astonishing 29% uplift over Zen 3 CPUs. Way higher than anyone predicted.

The Ryzen 9 7950X

AMD then turns its attention to the top of the stack, the Ryzen 9 7950X, to show us what the Ryzen 7000 series is capable of – describing the 7950X as “simply the best CPU for gamers and creators”.

Dr. Lisa Su generously gave us more than a mere glimpse of the performance we can expect out of the Ryzen 9 7950X.

These numbers are absolutely astonishing, it’s here that the sheer power of Zen 4 begins to sink in. This massive performance jump lends its hand to the single core performance increases and greater IPC numbers we saw earlier.

Similar to before, AMD then goes on to compare the 7950X with the competition, the Core i9-12900K. The performance comparisons display the following in 1080P gaming.

These results now make the Ryzen 9 7950X the fastest CPU in the world, as described by AMD CEO, Dr. Lisa Su.

Not only is the Ryzen 9 7950X up to 62% faster than the 12900K, but it also delivers all this performance at much better power efficiency. The 7950X has been rated as 47% more power efficient than the Core i9-12900K.

Ryzen 7000 series

AMD leads on by introducing the Zen 4 Ryzen 7000 CPU line-up officially. This will include four CPUs, the before mentioned 7950X, 7900X, 7700X, and 7600X. This Zen 4 lineup is designed to “bring the leadership performance of Zen 4 across all price points”.

Ryzen 9 7950X

The 7950X has a core count of 16 cores and 32 threads, it will also have a very high base core frequency of 4.5GHz, and a boost clock speed of 5.7GHz. The 7950X also has a huge 170W TDP (65W higher than any Ryzen 5000 series chip). As for Cache, the Ryzen 9 7950X comes with 80MB total, 64MB from L3, and 16MB from L2 (1MB per core).

Ryzen 9 7900X

The Ryzen 9 7900X will come equipped with a 12-core 32-thread setup, with base and boost frequencies topping 4.7GHz, and 5.6GHz respectively. The CPU retains the same 170W TDP as the 7950X. As for cache, the 7900X has 76MB of cache (64MB L3 and 12MB of L2)

Ryzen 7 7700X

The Ryzen 7 7700X comes sporting an 8-core 16-thread configuration, a smooth 4.5GHz base frequency, and a boost frequency that tops out at 5.4GHz. The 7700X has a lower TDP of 105W (The same as the flagship 5950X). As for cache, we have 40MB, 32MB of L3 cache, and 8MB of L2.

Ryzen 5 7600X

The Ryzen 5 7600X has a 6-core 12-thread configuration, The 7600X also features base and boost core frequencies of 4.7GHz and 5.3GHz respectively, boasting a 105 TDP in the process. As for cache, the 7600X will sport 38MB of total cache (32MB of L3 and 6MB of L2).

As you can see, the single core performance of each Ryzen 7000 series CPU was displayed via a Geekbench benchmark. The results were posted next to the 12900K’s scores, which pales in comparison to even the bottom-end Zen 4 CPU.

As everyone knows, faster single-core performance is great for gaming.

When the mainstream 7600X is compared to the i9-12900K in F1 2022, the Ryzen 5 7600X comes out on top, a whopping 11% faster.

Throughout the test, the 7600X consistently delivered around 420 FPS on average, leading us to believe that the test resolution was most likely 1080P (1920×1080). Since testing in this resolution allows for higher frame rates without being GPU bottlenecked.

The end result shows that the Ryzen 5 7600X, AMD’s mainstream CPU, proved to be 11% faster than the competition’s i9-12900K. Most of this performance comes from the massive 13% IPC increases over the previous Zen 3 CPU generation. AMD only predicted a 10% increase in IPC at first, 3% can make all the difference to a CPU running at over 5GHz.

It’s finally here, and it’s not just a rumor this time. The Zen 4 Ryzen 7000 series price and release dates have been officially announced.

Ryzen 7000 release date

The official release date of the Ryzen 7000 series CPU stands on September 27th, 2022. On the same day, Intel plans to unveil its 13th gen “Raptor Lake” CPU. This date has now been officially confirmed by AMD CEO Dr. Lisa Su.
